The Vegetable Garden in July

I'm pooped. This is the time of the season when I just let things in the garden fly. I seek out shade, air-conditioning, icy treats and a good book. I have come to terms with the fact that gardening, in Virginia, in July, is just downright awful. Awful, I say.

It is just too hot to weed. To stake plants. To bother. So . . . . things get a little overgrown. And for me, overgrown in the garden means scary creatures lurk beneath. I am a tad more than jumpy when I go to harvest the goods. Snakes? Black-widow spiders? A Gila monster?!

My mind reels with the possibilities. By the time I go to pick squash - under those huge leaves - I'm a mess. I yelped three times the other evening - my fear-reflexes being at Defcon Two. Once for a passing bunny rabbit (pathetic). The second for something cold and wet on my foot (I just ran away and did not stick around for the details).

And, then, I spotted this guy (click on the photo for a close-up). Tucked in the straw of the potato patch with a zen-like approach to life. I got the sense that he has seen it all. While I stared in awe, he was just short of yawning and rolling his eyes at me in sheer boredom. The Wise Old Toad of the Hollow. I could learn a thing or two from him.

In the meantime, I await the arrival of our tomatoes and corn. Oh, the sweet anticipation!

Normally it's awful here too for gardening in July. Today we got a reprieve from the muggy heat on the very day I'd girded myself to do battle with the overgrown, jungly garden. Yippee!

I'm with you on the heat avoidance! It takes everything I have to go out late in the day to water. And when I do, I have to wear pants and long sleeves to avoid getting 40 mosquito bites per second. Weeds? Forget it. They can just stay where they are till cooler weather. Give me a nice cool drink, my nice air conditioned house, and pictures of other people's pretty flowers to get me by because it's too hot to go out and see my own pretty flowers lol.

So funny . . . I mentally waffle between girding myself for the wilds of the garden and the deliciousness of AC and a tumbler of limeade. The latter has completely been winning out as of late - much to my delight!!!

That toad is an awesome awesome dude. Great picture! What a cool little man to have hanging around the garden. Also, toads are associated with money and luck!
