DIY and Grow Along - Moss Terrariums

Last month, days of mist, rain, fog and humidity restocked my moss source on our land. When I should have been doing lame things like, I dunno, scrubbing grout (does anyone enjoy this?!) - I instead gathered up a healthy pile of moss and created this. The lidded candy jar was a $1 find at a garage sale. You can also use a mason jar and they are super-cheap ($9 for a dozen at the local grocery store . . . )

Here's my tutorial on how to make one. I skipped the rock layer at the bottom this time around - the moss may not need as much drainage as other terrarium plants . . .

Have you had fun with moss lately? Or terrariums? Post your links!

Does moss die back during the winter? Could I bring some in now? We've had about 3 below-freezing temps in the last week. I have moss in a hanging basked outside, with a bit of vinca too, so it can hang down. Maybe I should bring that in for winter as well.

Hi Silvia - I think it does die back a bit - and comes back in the spring. The vinca should do fine over the winter as well.

But scooping up a little moss for a terrarium wouldn't hurt it - for an indoor showing!

I made a "moss floor" in our patio area. :o) OK, so it took a couple of years. But, now and then I would pick up pieces of moss, in our woods or on paths on our property, etc., throw the clumps down here and there in the patio area, step on them (you can see this is a complex, scientific method) >:o) and then sat back and did nothing. Eventually, all the moss spread and grew together and now it is a thick moss floor. I love it because it is green in the winter. I also put moss on the little wooded slope outside of our living room window. It looks so lush. Sometimes i pick moss to line pots of forced bulbs in the spring. Your moss is beautiful and I love your terrarium. It's such a great idea. Thanks!

BBO - Weeeeeee! Yeah, winter! I've had moss in other terrariums and it lasted for a looonnng time. I would just sprinkle a little water its way - whenever.

I think all the early plants are facinating. I grow lots of different kinds of moss around, but also liverworts and fern allies (some of which can make nice terrerium subjects themselves). Liverworts are cool because they make little cups and have very interesting wheel-like reproductive structures.

I wish I could go back in time and see when fern allies got to be huge trees (Can you imagine a clubmoss 40 feet tall?)

Thanks for the post! I am currently growing some moss in a couple of Ziploc bags until I get some glass for a terrarium! I might also want to outline my garden in moss... =)
